Resort Rundown: Alta Lodge

The beautiful Alta Lodge opened it doors in 1939, securing its sport in Little Cottonwood Canyon history as Alta’s first ski lodge. The lodge is located at the base of Alta Ski Area, providing guests with the ability to ski-in and ski-out, and Powderbird’s heli facilities are extremely accessible (just down the Alta Bypass Road—but we’ll pick you up and drop you off from the Lodge, so you don’t have to worry about that). The Alta Lodge is also conveniently located just 32 miles from the Salt Lake International Airport. In other words, you can rent a car or catch a shuttle and be at the Alta Lodge within the hour! Where else can you do that?

The Alta Lodge’s small size (57 rooms) allows guests to feel comfortable and “at home” in between long days of skiing Alta’s famous powder. In addition to the “steep and deep” expert terrain Alta is world-renowned for, you can find many runs and several lifts dedicated to beginner and intermediate skiing, making the Alta Lodge a great choice for skiers of all ability levels. And with 547 average inches of snowfall, everyone is guaranteed to have fun at Alta.

Dining & Amenities

Breakfast and a four course dinner is included with your stay, setting the Alta Lodge apart from its ski town counterparts. You have the option to enjoy dinner at a private table or meet new skiing friends by joining a larger group in the dining room. I’ve already had the privilege of tasting the delicious food prepared by the Alta Lodge, but here is a sample menu to get your mouth watering:

Enjoy a drink and cozy up in front of the fire at the Sitzmark Club, while taking in the mountain views. In 2011 USA Today even named the Sitzmark Club one of the “Top 10 Great Places for Aprés-ski Nightlife”.

The Alta Lodge is also the only Alta accommodation open during the summer season. If you find yourself in Little Cottonwood Canyon during the off-season, treat yourself to some tasty Sunday Brunch and stunning mountain scenery on the Lodge’s patio.
